ADHD is a neurological condition that impacts every aspect of an individuals life. People often think of a hyperactive 10 year old boy when they hear ADHD, but the hyperactive aspect may be in the mind rather than the body. That 10 year old boy is only one of many manifestations, all with incredibly different characteristics. The impacts may be positive or negative and will change with each stage of life.
The wiring of an ADHD brain makes seemingly simple tasks impossible. These limitations vary from person to person. One person may find folding laundry and putting it away to be utterly impossible, while another will do that without thinking. Many find studying and learning beyond challenging, while others breeze through school without a thought.
The challenges we face often make neurotypical people, people without ADHD, perceive us as lazy or stupid. They cannot fathom our challenge around certain tasks as they can do them easily and quickly.
We ADHDers are creative, resourceful, and whole. We sometimes require accommodations to fit into a world not designed for us, but when we can acknowledge our strengths as well as our weaknesses we can live a truly beautiful life with ADHD.
